Born into a religious and military family, the young Orde Wingate became a passionate Zionist on his first posting to Palestine and began to develop revolutionary guerrilla tactics to help the Jewish settlers he befriended there. He further developed his expertise in guerrilla warfare leading ‘Gideon Force’ in Ethiopia against the Italians.
His unorthodox tactics led him into frequent clashes with his military superiors and drove him almost to the point of breakdown and suicide. However, his strong religious convictions would see him through and take him to Burma where he devised a long range penetration strategy and elite fighting forces called ‘The Chindits’.
