Unschooled homesteader Sayward Luckett couldn’t read her name if you showed it to her, yet she fell in love with and married agnostic, book-learned frontier lawyer Portius Wheeler. Now it’s time to make a life with him in wild, wooded 1790s Ohio Territory. There will be children, seven in all; joy and hardships aplenty; inconstancies of heart; and the enduring legacy of settling a new land. Based on Conrad Richter’s trilogy of novels (he received a Pulitzer Prize for the third), this miniseries nominated for 6 Emmy Awards(r) celebrates the pioneering spirit as it chronicles Sayward’s heroic, unadorned life. Elizabeth Montgomery and Hal Holbrook (earning two of those six Emmy nominations) lead a strong cast that includes Jane Seymour and W.H. Macy (his first screen credit).

Profiling the legacy of one of Canada’s most important reformers, Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story explores the life of a social crusader and charismatic leader voted as the greatest Canadian of all time. Fiery prairie politician Tommy Douglas began as a Baptist preacher, but after witnessing injustices and the Great Depression’s poverty in Saskatchewan, Tommy gives up his pulpit for politics and joins forces with the socialist Canadian Commonwealth Federation to institute new laws within Canada’s government. Although blessed with brilliant insight, great speaking skills, and infectious charm, Tommy’s youthful idealism soon causes him to run headlong into opposition from the rich and powerful. This fascinating biopic depicts how Tommy is credited with protecting Canadians from farm foreclosures, instituting government insurance, building roads, bringing electricity to rural communities, forming a Bill of Rights, and establishing universal healthcare in his country.
