Oscar-nominated Clive Owen (Chancer, Closer) brings a brooding intensity to the role of private detective Nick Sharman in this stylish drama based on the best-selling novels by Marc Timlin. Blending classic noir elements with hard-hitting ’90s realism and explosive action, Sharman consolidated Clive Owen’s remarkable success and helped pave the way to Hollywood superstardom. The series features rapidly paced storylines from, among others, Tony Hoare (The Sweeney, Minder) and the award-winning Paul Abbott (Shameless, Touching Evil); Samantha Janus, Keith Allen, Gina Bellman, Ray Winstone and Bill Paterson are among the guest stars.

Nick Sharman is a disillusioned, down-at-heel private investigator. An instinctive loner with a shady past, he can also be charming, quick-witted, determined and, despite his faults, he has an undeniable attraction for many of the women he encounters. Although his line of work seemed a natural choice after his promising Metropolitan Police career fell apart, it is starting to feel like a dead end. But in the shadowy world of private investigation there will always be unfi nished business, and Nick’s natural ability to blend in with South London’s lowlife – combined with his occasional recklessness – makes him invaluable in cases that less streetwise professionals would normally refuse to touch. For Nick Sharman, there is often very little choice…

A dream cast brings Anthony Trollope’s Barchester novels charmingly to life in this engaging production from the golden age of Masterpiece Theatre. Featuring Alan Rickman in his breakthrough role as the odious Obadiah Slope.

The community of Barchester is shaken from its cosy complacency when a newspaper’s crusade against the Church of England’s practice of self-enrichment misfires. Overnight, Rev. Harding (Donald Pleasence) becomes a pawn in a battle between his younger daughter’s beau, John Bold, and his older daughter’s husband, Archdeacon Grantly (Nigel Hawthorne). Little do they realise that the worst is yet to come, until a regime change delivers Barchester into the hands of a most unholy trinity: the weak-willed Bishop Proudie, the domineering Mrs. Proudie, and the insufferable Rev. Obadiah Slope.
