In the late 1750s, Mabel Dunham (Jan Francis) leaves her home in Maine to join her father, Sergeant Dunham (Windsor Davies), in Fort Oswego on the shore of Lake Ontario.
She is accompanied by her Uncle Cap (former Doctor Who Patrick Troughton), a retired sea captain and the party is completed by Arrowhead (Gilbert Wynne), a Tuscarora Indian hired as a guide, and his squaw Oaissa (Aviva Goldkorn).
The Great War of Empire between Britain and France is at its height, and the journey is a hazardous one. Before she reaches Fort Oswego ‘ helped on the final lap by Pathfinder (Paul Massie), a courageous and fair-minded frontier scout, and Chingachgook (John Abineri), the last remaining Mohican, Mabel has seen Indian warfare in all its horror.
