Mr. Lewisham is an 18-year-old teacher at a boys’ school in Sussex. He meets and falls in love with Ethel Henderson, who is paying a visit to relatives in Sussex. His involvement with her causes him to lose his position and after moving to London in pursuit is unable to find her. After two and a half years Lewisham is in his third year of study at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington he has become a socialist and is reunited with his first love Ethel. His strictly regimented existence is thrown into chaos and while she returns his love she also hides a dark secret. She is involved in a plot that goes against his firmest beliefs.
